Japan SEL developed 130lm/W flexible organic EL lighting panel

Advanced Film Device Inc. (AFD Inc.), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Japan Semiconductor Energy Research Institute (SEL), has developed an organic EL panel with a luminous efficiency of 130.6 lm/W. This luminous efficiency is among the highest in the world in products that do not use a hemispherical light extraction layer. However, there are still problems such as a luminescent color of yellow and a general color rendering index (CRI) of only 30.

Developed by AFD Inc., a flexible organic EL panel having a size of 56 mm × 42 mm. When the brightness is 1000 cd/m2, the luminous efficiency reaches 130.6 lm/W, and LEDs, including lighting fixtures, rarely achieve such high efficiency. Since the surface of the resin substrate on the light-emitting side is processed as a light extraction layer, the panel is still thin. The CIE color coordinate is (0.49, 0.50), which is a vivid yellow color.

In addition, the two sides also disclosed a large-area flexible organic EL lighting panel with a size of 360mm × 300mm, and showed it at the developer meeting. The luminous efficiency is 110 lm/W, and the CIE color coordinate is (0.50, 0.50). In order to maintain the shape, a metal foil is attached to the back of the panel after fabrication, but it can be bent to a radius of 30 mm.


According to AFD Inc., this high luminous efficiency is obtained by adding a certain hole transporting material to the light-emitting layer to form an "exciplex" and reducing the energy loss. Exciplex refers to a material that emits light as electrons migrate between two different molecules. This time, an exciplex is formed between the host material of the light-emitting layer and the hole transporting material, thereby reducing the energy loss of the holes. The wavelength of light emitted based on electron mobility is greatly shifted to the long wavelength side. At the same time, the driving voltage is also reduced by about 0.3V.

However, the technicians of other companies have seen the product and they think that "this state can not be used for lighting." Since the illuminating color is bright yellow, the CRI value indicating the color rendering index is very low. The recent organic EL lighting panel has a CRI of at least 70, and a product with a higher color rendering index even reaches 90 or more. The color rendering index of 30 is close to that of a sodium lamp.

In this regard, AFD Inc explained that “in the orange, green and blue luminescent materials used for the luminescent layer, blue luminescence has not yet found a better phosphorescent material, making it more difficult to form an exciplex, so Fluorescent materials. In order to achieve the highest luminous efficiency under such conditions, the luminescent color becomes yellow. If white light is emitted, it may be difficult to exceed 100 lm/W.
