NTT DoCoMo, NEC, Panasonic Mobile Communications and Fujitsu have released the joint development results of modem (baseband) technology that can support GSM, W-CDMA, HSPA + and LTE simultaneously. After evaluating the performance of the LSI Engineering Sample, which is in charge of the communication control function, on February 24, 2012, all the test procedures required to connect with major networks and suppliers were completed. The baseband LSI integrates two LSIs that were previously required to be equipped on the terminal into a single chip, which can reduce the power consumption during communication and standby by up to 20% compared with the original, and also helps reduce the terminal price. The four communication methods supported are in compliance with the 3GPP standard specifications. Among them, in addition to the FDD method adopted by NTT DoCoMo, LTE also supports the TDD method that is estimated to be adopted in China and other regions. According to reports, the use of LSI based on this development technology is expected to reduce terminal size and cost and quickly put into production. NTT DoCoMo and other four companies will use this as an advantage to develop sales operations at home and abroad through their joint venture. In addition, it will continue to develop extended functions that support the new generation communication standard LTE-Advanced. The above four companies reached an agreement with Fujitsu Semiconductor and South Korea ’s Samsung Electronics on the establishment of a joint venture company in March 2012. The joint venture company is mainly responsible for jointly developing and selling communications supporting LTE and LTE-Advanced platform.
