High image quality, ease of use and high LG W7 OLED TV experience

At the CES 2017 Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year, LG’s latest W7 “Wallpaper” series of OLED TVs became the most popular product. For many people, the W7 series is the final form of television. The thickness of this TV is only 2.57 millimeters, only three-quarters of the thickness of ordinary OLED, hanging on the wall looks like it opened a window. At the same time its weight is only 7.5 kg, almost like a mural hanging on the wall, called an artwork. In this respect, no other TV can go beyond its right.
The stunning design is just a beginning. After all, as a TV, besides design, there must be excelsive effects and functions. As the latest technology representative of LG W7 series OLED TV, based on the ultra-thin body, you want to further improve the brightness, accuracy, difficulty is quite high.
What's more, even though the W7 itself is a terrific TV, all of LG's OLED TVs will use the same panel and processor this year, which means more than a flagship product, even an entry-level B7 series. Similar design elements and enhanced sound systems are also available, and will be officially launched in April this year.
Because W7 requires a very unique installation method, it cannot be evaluated in the office like other TVs fixed to the base during the evaluation process. So I went to a San Francisco-based LG to provide evaluation, often said, and with this W7 wallpaper TV with Dolby sound alone for four hours.
Unusual but easy to use

Due to the evaluation site provided by LG, I was unable to evaluate this 65-inch Signature W7 series OLED TV from the out-of-box phase. However, I can imagine that such a TV would not be too heavy even if it was packaged. It was easy to get out of the box.

The W7 uses a separate screen and speaker design with a separate speaker bar. Because the W7 screen is too thin, the sound bar is simply the thickness of a giant in front of the screen. It is neither light nor light. It can't even be hung on the wall, nor can it be hidden because it is the only sound unit in the W7. But whether you like this design or not, at least from the audio point of view, it's not bad.

The W7's soundbar is not small, its size is 146×21×8.3mm and its weight is as high as 10.4kg, so it really needs a small TV cabinet to accommodate it. In addition to the TV cabinet, or bookcases that are wide enough, you also need special cables to connect the sound bar to the screen.
Not only does the W7's Dolby sound need to be output as sound through this soundbar, but the screen's various power supplies, input/output connectors, etc., need to be provided via this speaker base. The W7 is a very imaginative product of LG, so this kind of sound bar must be used as a carrier to carry some basic functions.
Many people will have such questions, why LG does not choose to put all the components in a small black box, and then hid in a cupboard or closet. However, if this is done, it will certainly have a certain impact on sound effects. This is unacceptable for a TV that sells for $8,000 (approximately RMB 55,163). After all, in addition to design and picture quality, high-end televisions are also a feature that must be guaranteed. Therefore, LG did not completely use the speaker's practice, be considered a reasonable choice.

The cable connecting the W7 to the pedestal is a white flat cable that looks quite complicated and should be an excuse LG developed specifically for the W7. If you wish, you can also choose to paint the cable the same color as the wall or wallpaper, or bury it directly in the wall during the renovation phase. Of course, the premise of this is that you decided to purchase this TV during the renovation.

All sources will be connected to the back of the base through this cable, and the base also provides a TV's conventional interface, including four HDMI 2.2 (HDCP) interfaces, three USB interfaces (including a USB 3.0), can be used Connect external storage devices. For those who want to use an external audio source, the W7's dock also provides the ARC HDMI 2 interface. If you want to use Dolby Atmos audio on your TV's built-in app, only Vudu is currently supported.
The installation of the W7 screen is easy. Due to its light weight, it is only necessary to fix the bracket on the plasterboard to fix the W7 to the wall.
Flagship TV, flagship function

Although the W7 did not add much new features compared to last year's 6 series, the overall change is still very significant, and the overall performance of the W7 has improved a lot.
LG added a "medium black OLED polarizer" function to the W7 to help the W7 to maintain a certain level of black level performance in a bright room through an anti-reflection film. Previous LG OLED TVs have a little purple effect in a bright room, and the addition of this polarizer can be black in most cases unless flashlights are used. At the same time, LG also controls the overall brightness very well, so even if it only needs a relatively small adjustment, it will bring more obvious results.

The W7 is about 25% brighter than the previous OLED TV, which means that the W7's maximum brightness is 540 nits. At the same time, the picture's highlight mode will have further improvement.
In the effect of black level, W7 also has a very obvious change. I have previously criticized LG's OLEDs for their lack of details in the shadows. The transition from dark gray to black is too fast, resulting in missing details. This time, I passed a special test and found that the improvement of W7 is more obvious.
Due to these improvements, the W7 ribbon phenomenon has also been significantly reduced. However, when playing streaming media content, some of the ribbons due to compression are also seen, but much improved than before. Basically, the effect of the content source is very close to the content source.

Finally, I found that LG's 2017 OLED TV is also more pure white than before. Too many products will have occasional green flashes on the pure white screen, but now they are basically gone. At the same time, in the case of extreme color changes, the angle of view is also much larger.
Overall, W7 has further improved overall results compared to previous products, so I believe that W7 should be more popular after the launch.
HDR works better Apart from continuing to support Dolby and HDR10, LG also added HLG support for wireless HDR this year, as well as HDR functionality developed by Technicolor. If you are not interested in the differences between the various HDR functions, then just keep in mind that W7 is compatible with a wide variety of HDRs and works well.
Smart remote is amazing

LG continued to use its own WebOS system and upgraded to the latest 3.5 version. In addition, the LG is equipped with a smart remote controller that is also very interesting and can work very well with ordinary remote controllers, and is the most comfortable remote controller I have used so far. Long presses of numeric keys can launch specific applications and even provide a special launch button for Netflix and Amazon at the bottom.
In WebOS 3.5 system, LG offers many preset templates to choose from, especially the functions named ISF-Night and ISD-Day, which can provide the best results for bright different environments through professional calibrators.
Similarly, LG also added a HDR theater mode that allows users to provide different brightness adjustments for different light and dark environments in the room. It is worth mentioning that LG can meet a variety of different needs in a variety of preset modes, even in the broadcast of some games can bring a good motion smoothing effect.
Best picture quality market

From my personal point of view, the W7's screen effect can be described as unprecedented, but the future is certainly positive. LG has made various improvements in the effectiveness of the W7, and the only hope for the future to challenge the W7 is Sony's first OLED TV XBR-A1E. I am very much looking forward to the direct comparison between the two top OLED TVs in the future.
Considering the thickness of the W7 itself, this effect can be achieved, and it can be described as a surprise to the heavens. Although technically not difficult, given the $8,000 price and performance, there should really not be too many opponents.

The W7's image quality is quite outstanding, both in terms of black level, brightness and contrast are very good, there are nearly perfect color performance and first-class image processing capabilities. So even if it is a 4K Blu-ray old movie, it will be able to renew its charm on the W7.
Overall, the LG W7 is the best one among the TVs reviewed so far, and I'm very satisfied with it.
Speaker base performance

I have great expectations for this W7-compatible speaker, especially for the Dolby Atom sound. To be sure, the overall effect of this speaker is good, but for LG itself, the performance of the virtual Atoms surround sound is still a little bit disappointed with my expectations, somewhat disappointed.
To be fair, the surround sound of the W7 is very good compared to other TVs, but it must be supported by certain audio tracks to experience the taste of the virtual Dolby Atmos effect.

In my evaluation process, I tried to make the sound from the screen rather than the bottom of the impression in different seats and angles, but after all, the distance between the two is relatively long, so it is basically similar to the ordinary sound bar.
The effect of the W7 speaker base is lower than I expected, in which the bass is relatively sufficient, the mid-range depth is not enough, and the high pitch is not particularly transparent, but the overall effect is relatively average to meet the needs of ordinary users.

LG W7 OLED TV is a very amazing product, and as LG's flagship product this year, I gave 4.5 points in the five-star rating. From the TV itself, the W7's performance is perfect, both design and image effects are the best. The 0.5 point deduction is from the sound effect, although the base is very large, but there is still a little difference with the expected effect.
If you think that W7 is too expensive or you don't like this split design, then consider LG's other OLED TVs. If you like this wallpaper-style slim design, then I think basically W7 is already the best product on the market.
