TCL wants to challenge giants such as LG to create a global brand

According to foreign media, in 1987, when Li Dongsheng, the person in charge of the telephone factory, visited Philips, which was headquartered in the Netherlands, he was shocked by the electronics giant. Thirty years later, his name is already Thomson Lee, who leads the world's third-largest TV maker, the TCL Corporation. And Philips has to change its business model under the great competitive pressure brought by Asian companies. At present, it has even dropped out of the top 10.

According to the Spanish "Abbeid News" reported on April 24th, after replacing the European and American companies, TCL has begun to surpass Sony and other Japanese companies, and launched a violent offensive against South Korea's Samsung and LG. Samsung and LG have always been leaders in the world TV market, with 23% and 15% share respectively. Although TCL’s 6% market share is still a long way from the South Korean giants, the company is working with Chinese brands such as Hisense, Skyworth, Konka, and Changhong to develop at an unstoppable pace. Among the top ten TV manufacturers in the world, China has occupied 5 seats. The television sets made in China are inexpensive and can rival the television sets made in Japan and South Korea.

According to data provided by TCL, the company's average daily output was nearly 50,000 units, and a total of 17.3 million TV sets were sold last year. However, the company not only produced TVs, but also produced 83.54 million mobile phones (the fifth in the world), 5 million air conditioners (fifth in the world), 1.53 million refrigerators (the seventh in the world), and 1.32 million washing machines (in the world Sixth), 1.92 million LCD screens. TCL currently employs more than 70,000 people and has offices in more than 80 countries around the world. In 2015, its sales revenue was 14.267 billion euros and its profit was 440 million euros.

The report said that the successful experience of the TCL headquarters in Huizhou, Guangdong is a microcosm of China's economic development over the past 40 years. In an interview with foreign reporters, Li Dongsheng pointed out that Chinese companies have narrowed the gap with their competitors and even surpassed them by investing more in innovation. He also expressed his firm belief that Chinese companies will become leaders in the field of electronic communications within 10 years.

Li Dongsheng emphasized the importance of technology. Chinese companies hope to get rid of the reputation for low quality and increase their presence in the international market. Zhang Yang, a principal of the company, said that TCL has focused on Europe, Latin America, and Southeast Asia, as well as emerging markets such as Russia, India, Brazil, and Africa, and will start the name of TCL throughout the world. Like TCL, China Telecom and China Telecom giants, TCL also invested a lot of manpower and capital for R&D.

The report said that in order to enhance its image and get rid of the "Made in China" drag, TCL also spends heavily on advertising. In 2013, the company bought the right to naming the Hollywood China Grand Theatre. In 2004, TCL acquired the Thomson color TV business and the Alcatel mobile phone business. Li Dongsheng, who has a long-term vision, does not rule out new merger and acquisition plans, especially in emerging countries.

Zhang Yang stated that TCL is committed to further self-improvement and creating a global brand, but the biggest challenge at present is the slowdown of economic growth in countries such as China. As a well-known Chinese TV brand that began exporting overseas in 1999, TCL is trying hard to enter the living room of thousands of families.
