Infineon Technologies AG has introduced a new low saturation voltage drop VCE(sat) IGBT . These IGBTs are optimized for low switching frequency ranges from 50Hz to 20kHz. The switching frequency of this range is common in uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) as well as in photovoltaic inverters and inverter welders. The new L5 series is based on TRENCHSTOPTM5 thin wafer technology, which results in inherently low conduction losses due to the further optimization of carrier structure.

With a averaging score of 1.05 V for a typical saturated voltage drop (VCE(sat)) at 25 °C, these new IGBTs have succeeded in raising the efficiency level to a new level – replacing its predecessor TRENCHSTOP with the L5 series IGBTs increase efficiency by up to 0.1% in the NPC1 topology and 0.3% in the NPC 2 topology.
