Circuit Function and Advantages The circuit shown in Figure 1 is an isolated flyback power supply that uses a linear isolated error amplifier to provide feedback from the secondary side to the primary side. The optocoupler-based solution's transfer function is non-linear, varying with time and temperature; the isolation amplifier is different, its transfer function is linear, very stable, and the offset and gain errors are transmitted when the feedback signal is transmitted across the isolation barrier. Very small.
The entire circuit is powered from a 5 V to 24 V supply and can be used with standard industrial and automotive power supplies. With a 5 V input and 5 V output configuration, the circuit has an output capability of up to 1 A.
This solution can be adapted to isolated power applications where higher DC input voltages produce lower output voltages, with higher efficiency and smaller size. Including 10 W to 20 W telecom and server power supplies, efficiency and printed circuit board (PCB) density are important for such power supplies, and often use a -48 V power supply as input.
