Verizon will build new set-top boxes based on technology acquired from Intel

Citing "Variety" report, the largest US telecommunication operator builds new set-top box equipment based on technology acquired from Intel. By the end of the year, related services will be launched in at least one Verizon Fios market. The magazine also stated that Verizon has in fact submitted relevant documents to the FCC and obtained approval for the "Video Set-top Box" last week. The report pointed out that the documentation mentions OnCue, which is the same name as Intel's previous TV service.

Intel sold Internet TV projects to Verizon a few years ago, rumored that the deal had a turnover of 500 million U.S. dollars. At that time, industry analysts were very much looking forward to how the telecommunications giant would use this acquired technology. In the fall of last year, Verizon introduced a free mobile video service called Go90, which claims to use some of Intel's technology. At the beginning of the launch, the service included about 8,000 TV series and more than 35 exclusive TV series.

The brand-new set-top box, code-named Mallard, will provide a completely new interface to Verizon's existing Fios TV service, and the news also indicates that Verizon had already started the project before acquiring Intel. The set-top box does not need to rely on traditional cables, but a complete online video service.
