Tesla spends millions of dollars to upgrade Autopilot data storage system

In the next few years, Tesla's production scale will grow at a rate of 10 times, and now the amount of data storage is just the tip of the iceberg of big data.

More data acquisition sensors have been added to Tesla's new Autopilot/autopilot hardware kit than currently configured. In addition, the number of new car deliveries has reached 25,000 in the third quarter. The increasing number of new cars and data volume makes Tesla need a more reliable data storage system for the subsequent improvement of the system learning ability of the vehicle.

According to people familiar with the matter, in order to store and analyze the increasing amount of data, Tesla recently purchased a new InfiniBox system from INFINIDAT to support the next-generation Autopilot operation and future data collection. INFINIDAT was founded by technology giant EMC's Symmetrix storage platform and Moshe Yanai, the inventor of IBM's XIV storage system.

Targeting high-performance enterprise data storage, InfiniBox solves performance, usability and scalability issues to accelerate the speed of business-critical applications. INFINIDAT relies on current standard hardware and redefines storage tiering with software to provide a storage system that is fast, practical, and easy to deploy.

It is reported that Tesla purchased the savings box data storage capacity at least 2pb level, the average price is 1 million US dollars. Mainly used for applications that require high stability, such as automotive learning systems. According to INFINIDAT, InfiniBox is equipped with a triple redundant power supply and data path to provide 99.99999% availability with less than 3 seconds of downtime per year.

This system is also very outstanding in terms of energy saving. Many people think that this is not important because it does not affect the efficiency and cruising range of the car. However, given the importance of big data today, the power consumption of data centers has now reached 3% of global electricity, which has made major companies more cautious in investing in new hardware.

At present, Tesla has not issued relevant comments and confirmations on the new system.

Now, the stronger a company's ability to acquire, store, and analyze data, the greater its competitiveness. This is the slogan of data storage company and Tesla supplier INFINIDAT, and is now the accepted truth in the big data world.

In terms of big data, Tesla is absolutely very confident. In order to promote autopilots to the market as quickly as possible, Tesla has developed a very tight schedule, and most of its competitors' autopilots are not expected to be available until 2018-2020. The hundreds of millions of miles of data collected through the first generation of Autopilot is an important factor in Tesla's confidence in the autonomous car market.

According to the current public report, Tesla's new Autopilot will be equipped with 8 cameras, 1 radar and 360° short-range ultrasonic sensors. The system not only has a significant improvement in overall performance, but also enhances the visual recognition ability. But Sterling Anderson, Tesla's Autopilot project director, has made it clear that the data collected by the previous generation Autopilot is still useful:

Tesla uses the sensors of all of its vehicles to collect data, and then draws high-precision maps for the driving environment of the car. When other vehicles travel to the corresponding area, they send the already drawn maps to the “map block” of the car. The car will compare the data collected by the sensor with the map received, making it easier to drive.

It is expected that by the end of this year, Tesla will also deliver 15,000 vehicles with the new Autopilot/autopilot kit. The new InfiniBox will also be available soon and will begin supporting Tesla's new data storage system. In the next few years, Tesla's production scale will grow at a rate of 10 times, and its data collection and number of cars will also skyrocket at the same rate. The current amount of data storage is just the tip of the iceberg of big data.
