LED backlights will reach $1 billion in sales after 4 years

The US McLaughlin Consulting Group predicts that sales of large-size LED backlights for LCD panels such as notebook computers, monitors, and televisions will reach $1 billion by 2011.

The company expects that in the past, liquid crystal panels with cold cathode fluorescent tubes with a wide range of color performance will be sold at the lowest price when profitable. In 2012, 46% of TVs will have more than 50% of products using direct-lit LED backlights. . The direct type referred to here means that an RGB LED is disposed directly under the liquid crystal panel. Under the same conditions, the share of end-illuminated LED backlights using RGB LEDs in the portable notebook market with increased AV functionality will exceed 50% in 2011. The end-illuminated type refers to an LED disposed on the side of the liquid crystal panel. If the end-illuminated type also becomes a model that uses white LEDs, the share of LED backlights is expected to exceed 50% in the portable notebook market that only displays data by 2012.

As a driver of the LED backlight market, MCG believes that it is the function and price of LED backlights. Even if panel manufacturers sell LCD panels with LED backlights at a price slightly higher than MCG, the large-scale adoption of LED backlights will be delayed by up to five years. Therefore, when the price is higher, in addition to being able to partially fill the high cost of the LED, it is also necessary to consider the reasons why suppliers and consumers choose to purchase LED products. The company said that the more LED backlights can provide consumers with higher value than CCFL, the faster the backlights of LCD panels, monitors, laptops, etc., will be converted to LEDs.

In addition, the speed of CCFL transition to LED will not only affect LED companies, but also bring significant impact to LCD panel manufacturers and finished product processors. Vendors that can respond quickly to this trend will significantly increase their competitiveness and expand their market share.
