Light is one of the important environmental factors that affect the growth, development and survival of aquatic organisms. Dr. Gao Xiaolong studied the effects of different LED light colors on the growth, metabolism and energy budget of abalone. In this study, energy, biology and other methods were used to initially explore the growth, survival and physiological response mechanisms of the light source (red, orange, blue, green), natural light and dark environment. The experimental results showed that the survival rate, specific growth rate, food intake and bait conversion efficiency of abalone under blue or green light were significantly lower than those of red and orange (P <0.05).
Pepsin, amylase and cellulase activities were significantly higher in the red or orange light treatment than in the other light color treatment groups (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in lipase activity between different light colors (P>0.05). Under blue or green color treatment, lactate dehydrogenase activity and lactic acid content increased (P <0.05), indicating that anaerobic metabolism gradually increased.
Under blue or green color treatment, abalone loses more energy in excretion, defecation, and respiration than energy obtained from food, and thus exhibits negative growth. Under red or orange color treatment, abalone receives more energy from food, and loses less energy during excretion, defecation, and respiration, so assimilation efficiency (K1) and net growth efficiency (K2) are significantly higher than Other light color groups (P <0.05). Therefore, it is preferable to use a red or orange light source during the culture of the abalone.
